Work-life balance is big news right now. In fact, it's becoming another "holy grail" we're told we should work to achieve. We read how-to articles and join pottery classes, or take up yoga. Some of us might even feel guilty that we don't have it.
But hang on a minute -
what actually IS work-life balance? How can you tell when you've got it? And once you have it, then what?
The media tends to talk about work-life balance as if it is a fixed and somehow predetermined state. And if you've ever crossed a stream on stepping-stones, and found the wobbly one, you'll know that a point of balance does exist.
But it's a point you move through and around, away from and back again. Balance is dynamic, not static.
And another thing. Isn't work part of life? The term "work-life balance" itself suggests that "work" is something separate to "life". Like you're not living while you're at work? Perhaps, as well as less work in your life, you might also consider how you can get more life in your work?
I'd like to suggest that the issue here is not about time. It's about how much of ourselves we bring to all of the different things we do.
And, it's about where you put your attention
So where to start? Well, how about a Work-Life Balance Tune-Up.
