"The greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our dispositions and not on our circumstances."
Martha Washington
Traditionally, depending on what kind of issue you wanted to work on, you'd choose between either an executive coach, or a life coach.
For example, if you wanted to work on what seemed to be a "purely" business or work related issue (e.g. performance, presentation skills, marketing) you might go to an Executive (or Business) coach.
Although you might get help with related personal issues, the coaching would be "work-centred".
Similarly, if you had a lifestyle issue, you might try a life coach specialising in that area - e.g. parenting, health and fitness, retirement, relocation, etc. The coaching here would be centred around that area of your life.
So, generally speaking, you'd need to choose between coaching expertise that was centred around work issues, or personal issues.
But what about the issues that fall between the two - like time management, stress, career change, work-life balance and so on.....?
You may already have spotted the problem with this traditional divide between executive and life coaching - which is: You don't divide neatly down the middle.
If you're like many of the women I work with, you're probably longing to feel more whole, not packaged up into neat boxes.
You want solutions that work for your whole life, not just some of it.
While both executive and life coaches will cover issues like work-life balance, it seemed to me that a more integrated, more person-centred approach was needed by professional women who wanted to find their best life.
You've probably already noticed that when work is out of alignment, then your life is too. And vice versa.
Growing a life AND a work-life with more meaning and more fulfilment requires a different kind of thinking.
One with emphasis on what constitutes a successful life.
Because your personal and professional "lives" are, in fact, part of the same life. And, you therefore have more resources, more options, and more opportunities for success, fulfilment and contentment than you might think.
That's why "Whole Life" coaching is not "work-centred" or "lifestyle-centred" - it's YOU-centred.
When you're at a crossroad and wondering "What's next", or you want to feel fulfilled, and get meaning and balance back into your life, a holistic coaching style just makes sense.
