Family, friends, clients, colleagues, staff, The list of people to take care of can seem endless. Especially at this time of year.
W-a-y down the list: perhaps that's where you normally are?
No surprise then that when discontent strikes you mostly ignore it? Bury your unhappiness with work. And mince pies. Channel restlessness into busyness?
Keeping busy only works some of the time though. Deep down, you know you're ripe for change. A fresh start.
You also have a sense of what kind of fresh start is needed. But you don't know how to translate that into something practical and workable. So, although maybe you've tried changing things, you've lost heart.
And this last year has challenged even the stoutest hearts. In times like these it can feel safer to stop looking to the future. Escape into daydreams. Or eyes down and keep the treadmill turning.
The trouble with daydreaming, and the busy-work treadmill, is that they sap your strength. And dull your senses. You get more stressed. Less confident.
Yet it's hope that keeps you going. Hope that beyond the clouds is a rosy, sun-coming-up horizon.
A fresh start is what's needed. And the good news is that you don't have to generate that out of nothing: a new, fresh beginning is coming soon. A new year. 2010. (Already!)
Right now you may be thinking, "Oh-oh, this isn't about New Year Resolutions is it? I don't do New Year Resolutions!"
Well, it is. And it isn't!
It isn't about New Year Resolutions as most people do them. Churning them out at the last minute, then ignoring them the rest of the year. Any goal setting exercise, approached in that way, will not work. And is SO discouraging.
It IS about a very different way to kick off the year with hope and resolve.
After all, New Year is probably the time when you DO think about your life. About much-needed work-life balance. Less stress. Feeling at home in your life. More juiciness.
There is a huge amount of "fresh start energy" around at New Year. (Hence why "New Year Resolutions" are still so popular.)
It makes sense to tap into it.
Yeah, they can be. Resolutions can be lukewarm, lack-lustre and downright boring. For many folk, actually, New Year Resolutions are just another form of daydreaming.
Powerful, heartfelt expressions of hope and resolve for the future. That's what New Year Resolutions can and should be.
Approached in the right way, New Year Resolutions can tap into that amazing "fresh start energy". Making them a key ingredient for revitalising your career, stepping out of overwhelm and getting off that treadmill.
New Year Resolutions can work.
A couple more things need to be addressed
Moving forward is easier when your path is clear. But, let's face it: paths are often strewn with all sorts of obstacles.
There can be an awful lot of tripping up and wandering about. And sometimes beating yourself up about past mistakes.
Relax. You're learning.
And OK. Maybe you DO slide back into old habits. Especially when stress strikes.
Time to say "You know what, this is where I am. Let's go forward from here." Time to forgive yourself for not being perfect.
And so many women try to do it alone! (Or with half-hearted support from friends who'd really much rather they stayed in the "let's have a good moan" club.) No wonder they lose heart.
So what do you need? How can you tap into the fresh start energy of New Year, and start moving forward with hope and confidence?
Start inspired - with a plan that actively supports you. And you'll get off to a flying start. Add in people and systems to sustain you over the longer term, and strategies for getting round obstacles and you'll really get into momentum with it. Long after the memory of the New Year bubbly has faded.
Carrying on as you are? (Uninspired, overwhelmed and running on empty?) Sure, that's an option. But if you do, you're likely to arrive at New Year 2011 (gulp) still complaining about the same old things. Still grinding the treadmill. Still burying your unhappiness at the bottom of the list.
Instead, let's gather your resolve and head for those yummy new horizons
