Making New Year Resolutions work - so you can move forward with hope and confidence into 2010

(Is is really possible to make a fresh start, and move forward with hope and confidence into a more balanced 2010?)

Family, friends, clients, colleagues, staff, … The list of people to take care of can seem endless. Especially at this time of year.

W-a-y down the list: perhaps that's where you normally are?

No surprise then that when discontent strikes you mostly ignore it? Bury your unhappiness with work. And mince pies. Channel restlessness into busyness?

Keeping busy only works some of the time though. Deep down, you know you're ripe for change. A fresh start.

You also have a sense of what kind of fresh start is needed. But you don't know how to translate that into something practical and workable. So, although maybe you've tried changing things, you've lost heart.

And this last year has challenged even the stoutest hearts. In times like these it can feel safer to stop looking to the future. Escape into daydreams. Or eyes down and keep the treadmill turning.

The trouble with daydreaming, and the busy-work treadmill, is that they sap your strength. And dull your senses. You get more stressed. Less confident.

Yet it's hope that keeps you going. Hope that beyond the clouds is a rosy, sun-coming-up horizon.

A fresh start is what's needed. And the good news is that you don't have to generate that out of nothing: a new, fresh beginning is coming soon. A new year. 2010. (Already!)

"But I don't do New Year Resolutions."

Right now you may be thinking, "Oh-oh, this isn't about New Year Resolutions is it? I don't do New Year Resolutions!"

Well, it is. And it isn't!

It isn't about New Year Resolutions as most people do them. Churning them out at the last minute, then ignoring them the rest of the year. Any goal setting exercise, approached in that way, will not work. And is SO discouraging.

It IS about a very different way to kick off the year with hope and resolve.

After all, New Year is probably the time when you DO think about your life. About much-needed work-life balance. Less stress. Feeling at home in your life. … More juiciness.

There is a huge amount of "fresh start energy" around at New Year. (Hence why "New Year Resolutions" are still so popular.)

It makes sense to tap into it.

"But aren't Resolutions just a bit of nonsense?"

Yeah, they can be. Resolutions can be lukewarm, lack-lustre and downright boring. For many folk, actually, New Year Resolutions are just another form of daydreaming.

Powerful, heartfelt expressions of hope and resolve for the future. That's what New Year Resolutions can and should be.

Approached in the right way, New Year Resolutions can tap into that amazing "fresh start energy". Making them a key ingredient for revitalising your career, stepping out of overwhelm and getting off that treadmill.

New Year Resolutions can work.

But it's not just about New Year Resolutions…

A couple more things need to be addressed…

Moving forward is easier when your path is clear. But, let's face it: paths are often strewn with all sorts of obstacles.

There can be an awful lot of tripping up and wandering about. And sometimes beating yourself up about past mistakes.

Relax. You're learning.

And OK. Maybe you DO slide back into old habits. Especially when stress strikes.

Time to say "You know what, this is where I am. Let's go forward from here." Time to forgive yourself for not being perfect.

And so many women try to do it alone! (Or with half-hearted support from friends who'd really much rather they stayed in the "let's have a good moan" club.) No wonder they lose heart.

So what do you need? How can you tap into the fresh start energy of New Year, and start moving forward with hope and confidence?

What you need:

  1. New Year Resolving that Works: . At the end of the day you need heartfelt, yet sparky, resolutions. So inspiring you can't wait to get started. But, however important the actual words are (and they are important) they are the end of the process of resolving.
Most folks go straight to the words and miss out the process. And then wonder why they don't keep their resolutions.
  2. Compassionate Savvy. Good news! You already know about a lot of the obstacles in your path. You already know about the things that hold you back. The points where you tend to give up. The usual excuses. Being savvy about them, you can use that knowledge to help yourself keep moving forward.
No more beating yourself up. It's about developing a tender understanding of your habits and foibles. And having strategies for dealing with them.
  3. A Plan. You know - milestones, targets, "what I'm going to do first is" … For some people, planning can feel a bit soulless, so they don't bother and end up just wandering about. But it needn't be like this - when it's done from the heart.
A plan should support you rather than being something to feel guilty about. It should be like having a route-map that you can rely on, ... a sort of "Sat. Nav." for your life!! So, when things get a bit flustered, you don't need to think too hard.
  4. Sustenance. Let's face it, making life style changes, however small, takes perseverance as well as vision. There may not be a lot of "gas in your tank" to start with. So it makes sense that it'll need topping up as you go along.
You need on-going "re-fuelling". You need support, ideas, help and encouragement. Maybe a buddy. Maybe a coach or a mastermind group. You need sustenance. You need nurturing. So you can follow through on those promises you make to yourself.

Start inspired - with a plan that actively supports you. And you'll get off to a flying start. Add in people and systems to sustain you over the longer term, and strategies for getting round obstacles and you'll really get into momentum with it. Long after the memory of the New Year bubbly has faded.

Carrying on as you are? (Uninspired, overwhelmed and running on empty?) Sure, that's an option. But if you do, you're likely to arrive at New Year 2011 (gulp) still complaining about the same old things. Still grinding the treadmill. Still burying your unhappiness at the bottom of the list.

Instead, let's gather your resolve and head for those yummy new horizons …

"Telling someone like me to 'pull myself together' is inappropriate. You didn't. My problem is real and affects my life. It is intertwined with everything and you appreciate that. I believe you can help me to work this through to my enormous eventual benefit at both a personal and business level.
I am an intelligent and ambitious woman in a very difficult space. I'm sure I'm not the first and I won't be the last. Women at my time of life are expected to compete in a serious playing field - it can be very hard. A sensible and sympathetic ear but with a focus can help hugely - and particularly from someone with no axe to grind! Thank you. I actually look forward to working hard toward my success!" How It Works

What’s Involved?

You’ll start by working through a short workbook, in your own time and at your own pace.

The main core of the programme is 3 x 1 hour holistic, personal, coaching sessions. Taking place over the telephone, each session will follow a structured format. These sessions are one-to-one. So there will plenty of space for your own unique situation to be worked through. (Further details of how these sessions are structured in a minute…)

Have fun with supplementary exercises/homework between sessions. (Honest! These are designed to be enjoyable as well as useful.)

Duration: A minimum of 5 weeks, and a maximum of 10 weeks, depending on how intense/relaxed you want it to be. (Not counting the complimentary follow-up session you get with the premium version – see below.)

Please note - because it taps into the powerful "new start" energy of the New Year season, you can only start this programme between 10th December 2009 and 30th of January 2010.

Plus on-line support for the duration of the programme: I really want you to make it happen this year. So you’ll also have access to that totally confidential, personal and effective coaching support via email.

Session Structure

  • Part 1
    1. You complete, in your own time, an introductory workbook, supplied via email. This will lay the groundwork for our sessions (Each exercise should take only a short time and should be completed over the few days prior to the session.)
    2. Session 1: "Drawing Down the Moon" in which our primary focus will be on developing and empowering your vision and getting to the heart of the issues involved. There will be homework!
  • Part 2
    1. Completion of homework from part 1
    2. Session 2: "Ripe for Change" in which we will finalise your written resolutions and create a "next steps" action plan. The focus will be on moving forward with confidence. (Takes place 1-3 weeks after Session 1)
  • Part 3
    1. Session 3: "Building-blocks for Success": In which we will be reviewing and celebrating your success so far, distilling what you've learned, making any course adjustments, and re-committing to the remaining journey. If necessary we will further refine your resolution statement. Takes place 4-6 weeks after Session 2

The premium version of the programme also includes:

  1. An additional complimentary 1 hour follow-up session. In which we will reinforce the lessons learned in the programme and develop a further up-to-the-minute action plan. (To be taken before end March 2010) Value ₤52
  2. On-going Support: E-mail coaching continues until the end of March. Value: Hmmm, a lot!
  3. Complimentary review copy of my new e-book "Motivation - An Expert Guide for Modern Women" planned release date 21st March 2010. Value at least ₤25

If you want to stop dreaming, and move forward with hope and confidence, maybe it's time to invest in that?
